Speaker Profile: Dr Sally Stewart-Wade

It is important that as plant producers we keep abreast of the current science developed on plant production and scientific literature reviews are an excellent way to do this.

Dr Sally Stewart-Wade has conducted two in depth scientific literature reviews on behalf of the Australian nursery industry through levy funded projects. In the first review, Sally reviewed the state ofscientific knowledge on plant pathogens in recycled irrigation water in commercial nurseries and greenhouses with particular focus on their detection and management. This review covered a range of cultural, physical, chemical and biological management options. Given the importance of water in plant production and the pressures to effectively manage its use, this review is invaluable to industry.

More recently Sally conducted a scientific literature review of the efficacy of organic amendments used in plant production with emphasis on containerised production. The review covered a broad range of amendments includingcomposts, manures, biochar, seaweed extracts to name but a few. The efficacy of the amendments was evaluated with consideration to their benefits and drawbacks, costs application rates and their practical relevance.

At the 2016 National Conference Dr Stewart-Wade will brief the industry be providing an overview of her findings through these two reviews.
