Garden Week
Garden Week, Western Australia’s premier outdoor event, is a celebration of the best in gardens, landscapes and outdoor living.
With hundreds of exhibits, breathtaking displays, new products and design concepts, inspirational ideas, garden art and thousands of colourful plants, Garden Week is a show not to be missed!
Of course, Garden week is more than just the opportunity to meet thousands of interested and qualified buyers. It provides the chance for your customers to get a full appreciation of your product range – to look, touch, feel and smell it. More importantly, it provides exhibitors with the chance to demonstrate a point of difference between their product and that of rivals. This is an often-underestimated benefit to members of the nursery and garden industry and one that could be used to greater advantage by both members and other exhibitors.

Newsletter
In January 2006 the Association changed from a "Weekly Update" format to that of a monthly newsletter. This has enabled improved content, format and is available in hard copy by request. Feedback from members thus far has been positive with the general view that they feel better informed of industry and association matters.
Member Benefits
The range and substance of member benefits offered is a strong focus in WA. Our twofold aim of offering improved value for subscriptions in addition to attracting new members augurs well for a strong membership base
Industry Workshops
Business and nursery management requirements are carefully considered in our offering of industry workshops and seminars. Changing socioeconomic factors, new building guidelines and traditional distribution channels are important factors to impact upon our industry. There is also a need to be more representative in the services we offer to regional WA.
Technical
Industry Development Officer
As part of a joint venture with Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL), NGIWA employs a full-time industry development officer (IDO) as part of a network of development officers in each state. The officer is available to provide guidance on the professional development of nurseries.
The IDO regularly convenes seminars, field days, workshops and information nights. Close liaison is kept with many government organisations, especially in relation to water, quarantine and environmental issues. The adoption of industry ‘best practice’ has become a priority item for nurseries in today’s competitive marketplace. Up-to-date information is provided for members of NGIWA at affordable rates.
Garry Hatcher can be contacted through the NGIWA office, TEL: 08 9352 4811 or email garry@ngiwa.com.au
Business Development Officer
Similar to the role of the IDO, NGIWA also employ a part-time garden centre development officer (BDO) as part of a national network of BDO’s. Emma Iddison fills this role in WA and it is her role to provide guidance and assistance on all aspects of retailing for the professional development of garden centres.
Emma can be contacted through the NGIWA office, tel: (08) 9358 4811, or email: emma@ngiwa.com.au.
Accreditation
Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA)
Accreditation continues to increase in popularity in Western Australia. In 2006, the state had 50 accredited business sites and several businesses that are almost ready for assessment.
This trend can be attributed to local government and state government plant procurement officers looking for the reliable supply of a quality plants. Some of the lowest tender suppliers in the past have been unsatisfactory.
The NIASA Field Day is a flag ship event of the NIASA Scheme with between forty and fifty people attending each year. The preferred venue is always an accredited nursery.
NGIWA welcomes the new national environmental program ‘EcoHort’, which will guide the industry through the next few years of environmental awareness and compliance.
Environmental issues are prominent in our annual calendar of events and there is plenty of information available through the NGIWA office.
Australian Garden Centre Accreditation Scheme (AGCAS)
This national scheme is designed to encourage and recognize excellence in garden retailing. NGIWA is committed to promoting the development of this scheme to retail garden centres throughout WA, with the assistance and guidance of the GCDO.
Accreditation under the AGCAS scheme is accepted by the majority of major retailers in WA as the benchmark for retail excellence within the nursery and garden industry.
In 2006, there were 18 accredited garden centres in WA, with several more working towards achieving the required standards.
Three of the four winners in the Small Garden Centre category of the 2006 Australian Garden Industry Awards (AGIA) were accredited garden centres from WA. Zanthorrea Nursery, the first accredited retailer in WA, has won the medium category in the AGIA awards several times, including the last two years consecutively. All of the above winners acknowledge Accreditation as a major factor in their success.
Additionally, the WA Water Corporation has used AGCAS accreditation as the required entry benchmark for garden centres to become part of the Water Corp sponsored ‘Waterwise Garden Centre Program’. Waterwise garden centres have been instrumental in assisting the gardeners of WA to maintain their interest in and commitment to gardening despite having reduced water availability for their gardens.
