Victoria
NURSERY & GARDEN INDUSTRY

Melbourne is also home to the Nursery & Garden Industry Victoria (NGIV), the peak industry body for the state’s horticultural industry. Its’ member base covers production, wholesale, retail and allied trades.

Background and History

In 2007 the NGIV celebrated its’ 104th anniversary. The industry association was officially established on November 4, 1903.

Over the past 100 years, the face of horticulture in Victoria has transformed to a more innovative, sustainable and internationally competitive sphere. The adaptability to a changing climate has seen our street scapes and gardens evolve to compliment the environment with aesthetic appeal and vision.

Throughout the past century the Victorian Association has been strongly connected, supportive and committed to the success and pride of horticultural businesses.

Promotions

After an enduring time of drought and water restrictions which have had an immense effect on our industry, NGIV’s focus in 2008 is to educate the public through our garden centres and encourage them to keep gardening with a ‘water wise’ attitude.

The Nursery & Garden Industry is a major contributor to the environmental well-being of Victoria and our economy and is leading the way with lobbying and confronting global warming. Along with Victorian home gardeners, our industry has also reacted positively by being the most efficient user of water within the horticultural industry.

The ‘Life is a Garden’ national campaign has been well received across the state with the branding heavily promoted by our members and popular with the public. This 2006 initiative is set for re-launch for Mothers Day and will again have wide spread media coverage mid year.

Our close association with 3AW/Magic 1278 radio stations has seen our industry gain further exposure, especially tapping into the greater gardening community who tune in for the popular gardening shows programmed on these channels.

Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show

The Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show is a pivotal and focal date at the helm of NGIV’s promotional activities.

MIFGS attracted over 120,000 visitors to the Carlton Gardens in 2007, contributing via economic benefit and tourism to Victoria, and continues to be a key drawcard to Melbourne’s major events calendar.

2008 Revealed - The Future is Here!

In 2004 NGIV launched its’ most exciting project to date with the unveiling of its ‘Revealed’. Revealed is a joint venture between NGIV and the Horticultural Media Association (HMA) and designed to showcase new and soon-to-be-released plants and products being launched throughout the year. The annual success of this event has seen it grow to incorporate 24 exhibitors and a record attendance. The evening (invitation only) encompasses the opportunity to network with the wider horticultural industry, media and buying groups and has become an exclusive segment of the Melbourne Flower & Garden Show.

Groundswell Magazine

NGIV’s Groundswell is a monthly magazine designed to keep readers up to date with the latest in the world of horticulture, innovation, plants and people of the industry. It is the voice of the Association and its’ members and a vital communication and advertising tool. The magazine is gaining rapid exposure at high profile events and becoming a ‘one stop shop’ providing information on members, training, jobs & events.

Special Interest

Sustainability, the environment, kids as the gardeners of the future and plant of the year are all things that NGIV see as key issues either affecting or influencing the industry. NGIV are committed supporters of the Tree and Shrub Growers Group (growers and allied traders), Schools’ Garden Awards and other interest groups. The Next Gen group, an initiative set up in 2006 to encourage 18-35 years olds to network and attend educational meetings & nursery tours, has soared in popularity and amassed a membership of 100 plus young people. The group continues to grow and their driving force is to enhance the skills of tomorrow’s future leaders.

Accreditation

In Victoria, NGIV is a strong supporter of the accreditation schemes with two dedicated project managers, Alan Hollensen and Robert Chin, who provide professional guidance to retail and wholesale members.

State Conference

NGIV stages a two-day state conference biennially focusing on state-based and localised industry issues.

Workshops

It doesn’t cost much to keep your business up to date with the latest in information technology. NGIV hosts dozens of industry relevant workshops throughout the year – many subsidised through Horticulture Australia Limited – to keep businesses up with the latest.

Caribbean Gardens Trade Market

For almost 33 years, NGIV’s Trade Market has held the position of being the leading market of its kind in Australia. Held the first Tuesday of every month (except January and November) the ‘trade only’ market of more than 100 stands offers production nurseries the opportunity to showcase their stock to prospective buyers, all under one roof.
