About this workshop
The knowledge being addressed in this workshop is of a general nature that all staff in the nursery & garden industry should have about potting mixes. The final outcome being to recommend to clients a potting mix for a given situation.
Workshop outcomes
At the completion of the workshop participants will be able to:
- recognise the different potting mixes on the market,
- identify mix components and their role in the mix,
- describe the physical, biological and chemical properties of potting mixes (in general),
- measure the pH of a potting mix,
- be aware of health and safety precautions for staff and clients when handling potting mixes and their components and
- recommend a potting mix for a given situation.

Target audience
Staff working in wholesale and retail businesses where potting mixes are manufactured, used or sold or who have limited knowledge of the differences between potting mixes. It is applicable to staff in retail garden centres and container nurseries. May include nursery personnel, business owners and production managers.
Workshop prerequisites
There are no pre-requisites. This is the first in the series of two sessions on Growing media.
