About this Workshop?

The world of garden design presents exceptional opportunities for garden centres.
Local Governments around Australia have established Landscape Guidelines for commercial developments and multi – unit dwellings. This workshop is designed to equip each participant to extend the services of their garden centres to include the preparation of local government compliant planting lists and basic garden designs.

The workshop will introduce an overview of Landscape Strategies and discuss the rationale which drives their implementation. It will guide the participant in the understanding and interpretation of council landscape policies and identify the differences between the requirements of commercial and domestic clients. Legal and environmental requirements, opportunities and risks will also be identified and discussed.

The activities in this workshop are designed to steer Garden Centres towards developing a design consultancy service which utilises the existing plant selection knowledge and garden design skills of operators and employees. The workshop will cover the processes of setting up a design consultancy, identifying a potential client base and level of professionalism expected by clients. Opportunities for promotion and determining appropriate charge out rates are also addressed.

The emphasis of this workshop is recognise and utilise the diverse range and potential value of skills that already exist within the garden centre. The aim of the workshop is to provide the mechanisms for extending the range of products and professional services available from garden centres.
