Water-wise initiatives in Victoria and Western Australia

Victoria's Consumer Water Campaign

'You can water your garden - ask us how.' That's the catchcry of the Nursery & Garden Industry Victoria (NGIV) campaign.

Six hundred garden centres are receiving free point of sale signage to encourage people to enjoy their gardens and be sensible about using water.

"Our messages are all positive to gardeners and our objective is to position the garden as something to be enjoyed, while aiming for the overall goal of reducing water use in the garden," says NGIV Garden Centre Development Officer, Alan Hollensen.

NGIV has worked closely with the four water authorities covering Melbourne to develop the campaign which will also take the messages to people through displays at home shows.

Western Australia's Consumer Water Program

In a state where water restrictions have become accepted in recent years, the Western Australian consumer water campaign is moving up a level to provide home garden waterwise assessments.

To become a Waterwise garden centre in WA, you must be accredited under the Australian Garden Centre Accreditation Scheme (AGCAS)

For only $65, trained horticulturists from a local Waterwise accredited garden centre will visit, assess and provide guidelines to the homeowner on how to make their garden more waterwise.

"Working closely with our WA Water Corporation, the industry has provided training for over 100 staff from garden centres to prepare them for this program," says Nursery & Garden Industry Western Australia (NGIWA) Garden Centre Development Officer, James Robilliard.

"This is in addition to past training where we have prepared hundreds of retail staff to advise customers about plant selection, grouping, mulching and other aspects of waterwise gardening."

The general campaign in WA is gaining momentum as more garden centres are seeking to become Waterwise Accredited Garden Centres - which first requires Australian Garden Centre Accreditation Scheme (AGCAS) accreditation.
