Looking for new members
Members with a difference come & join us. Our territory members come from the diverse growing areas of tropical coastal Darwin and Gove, milder tropical Katherine and from temperate climate Alice Springs. We also have strong support and regular contact with our NT Government ministers and local industry offices.
Tropical plant introductions
NGINT members are a creative and adventurous team, conducting plant-collection trips in conjunction with the development of export opportunities through networking overseas and nationally. Plant development usually involves strategic partnerships to produce outstanding and uniquely tropical plant species for the enjoyment of consumers nationally.
Training, Seminars, Business & Skills Development
The NGINT organises appropriate nursery specific courses and workshops in consultation with members to ensure they are kept up-to date with current information and standards. Such areas covered are professional development and business profitability. Topics include irrigation, growing media & IPM.
Support comes from local government DPIFM and the closely aligned body of the Northern Territory Horticulture Association (NTHA).
NIASA
There are a significant number of our members participating in and gaining professional recognition for raising the standards in all aspects of wholesale nursery production across the NT. There are currently nine NIASA accredited Nurseries.
Support is provided by a Nursery Industry Development Officer to conduct nursery visits, NIASA audits and provide expertise and advice on technical issues, pest and disease management and waste water management.
AGCAS
There are currently two accredited garden centre under the AGCAS scheme. There is another three garden centres working towards accreditation.
Support is provided by an Industry Development Officer to promote AGCAS, conduct Garden Centre visits and AGCAS audits and assist in the development of retailing skills and marketing advice.
Special interest groups
NGINT covers diverse interest groups and facilitates information exchange and representation when considering core issues such as production standards, horticultural land releases, marketing and industry promotion, service and employment issues and industry water use and responsibility. The NGINT is represented on the new NT Weed Risk Management Reference Group and the NT Horticultural Association (NTHA).
The NGINT has a very strong industry promotional group, with its main focus on organising the associations annual industry showcase event, the NT Tropical Garden Spectacular.
The NGINT continues to support and participate in the Greater Darwin Landscape Vision to develop a truly magnificent tropical garden city. The NGINT continues to support and participate in the Greater Darwin Landscape Vision and Creating Darwin's Future - A Tropical Harbour City to develop a truly magnificent tropical garden city. NGINT Membership also includes membership of the NTHA and the additional services this association provides in the NT.
NextGen Nursery Group
2007 has seen the introduction of the NextGen Nursery Group into the NT. An enthusiastic group led by past Young Leaders, the concept is to provide a forum for 18 to 35 year-olds to meet, exchange ideas and hone leadership skills. The nursery and garden industry has many enthusiastic and successful young people, who will shape the future of the industry.
Social events
NGINT boasts regular social events for members to exchange information and ideas and to make friends and network with people from a wide range of industry sectors including universities, allied traders, landscapers, wholesale and retail nursery people and plant hire businesses. Regular events include truly Territorian BBQ's, function dinners with fun guest speakers, special presentations to members and of course AGM and Christmas functions.
Tropical Garden Spectacular - August 9th - 10th, 2008 Attracting over 10 000 visitors each year the NGINT's Tropical Garden Spectacular is the industry's largest event and greatest promotional opportunity. With the assistance of the George Brown Botanical Gardens, NGINT presents an incredible showcase of tropical landscaping and lifestyle. NT Government assistance ensures displays, entertainment, themed gardens and overall ambiance are of a very high standard. Timed to capture the perfect end-of-dry-season conditions, this event is a "must-see" for anyone contemplating a holiday or business trip to the Top End.
