About this Workshop?
Garden centre operators and their staff know plant materials. This workshop will encourage participants to adopt the key theoretical principles of composition that combines those plant skills with the elements of design.
Creative garden designers practice a system which results in a functional garden, combining art and graphics with natural science. The exploration of UNITY, RHYTHM, FOCALISATION, BALANCE and PROPORTION will provide design rules to guide participants in the development of a garden design. The workshop will provide base skills enabling participants to convey their design message graphically, textually or orally in the accepted language of design. Participants will receive instruction in the essential components necessary to communicate their design ideas to clients.
The desired outcome of the workshop is the ability to create a scaled plan which can be interpreted and installed by professional landscape contractors or DIY home gardeners. Developing drawing skills will be a principal focus and participants will be encouraged to prepare a simple design during the workshop.
Important elements in the workshop include the allocation of space, relationships between functional areas and drawing a conceptual plan view and elevation/cross sectional sketch.
Drawing is a graphic skill and the workshop will cover the fundamentals including drawing materials, landscape symbols and presentation techniques. The workshop will also review the software available to assist in the production of garden designs.
Workshop outcomes
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the key theoretical principles of design
- Apply geometric or natural form to effectively allocate space
- Communicate the design by manually drawn plan – (birds eye view and elevation/cross sectional)
- Employ accepted landscape graphic styles.
- Develop the site by functional requirements and draw a garden plan.
- Review Computer Assisted Drawing software.

- Theories of design

Who Should Attend?
Garden Centre Operators and staff who wish to get started on the process of developing an effective garden design plan. This workshop is a prelude to fully competency-based courses for individuals who may be interested in furthering their career as garden designers. Participants who regularly undertake design services and can demonstrate ability to draw professional landscape garden may be eligible for Recognition of Competency by Registered Training Organisations at AQTF Level 4.
Workshop prerequisites
A sound knowledge of plant selection and basic garden design and ideally participants should have completed the first level of the NGIA Garden Centre Development Series. ‘Garden Design Insights’.

Session length
Full day. This workshop analyses the theory of design composition, provides the steps for undertaking the design process, and equips participants to manually draw garden design presentations.
The workshop will stimulate the practical development of a functional and aesthetic garden design with practical drawing exercises to support the learning process. An activities guide for developing drawing skills for the design process will be completed.
